Hailing from Budapest, Hungary, instrumental sludge/doom metal band Her Highness is finally releasing its first full-length album. The duo, formed by K.T. and K.A. in 2014, is pairing a depravating musical vision with an unusual lineup: their choice of instrumentation consists solely of bass guitar and drums. After three splits (with Worthless, Vanta and Negative Slug) and several powerful, ear-crushing live shows across the country and beyond its borders, taking advantage of the forced break caused by the ongoing pandemic, they have recorded these outbursts to be perceived by the few deviant individuals who dare to dig deep enough in the sludge and doom underground's filth.
Visions of a Lower Life offers six hymns of despondent sludge, laced with classic doom metal riffing, otherworldly psychedelia, additional noises and dissonant sickness. The carefully planned methods of recording allow the songs to bear multiple layers of instrumentation, resulting in an overwhelming wall of sound. As the band's other works, the album is also to be interpreted in its entirety, having most of the tracks merging into each other, causing a continuity of unpleasant journeys.

Possibilities in a Deviant Rebirth:
An introduction to the monotonous psychosis that follows, a simple bass riff with tons of feedback and sound manipulation. A long existing idea which took its final form in the studio. The title was indirectly inspired by some parts of J.G. Ballard’s novel “Crash”, but it chillingly aligns with the band’s and the world’s current state as well.

Adversaries of Society:
A new abomination born from a riff dating back to at least 2016, doom riffing feeding on strong Bongripper and Electric Wizard influences with ill twists.

The Burnt Offering:
The oldest song on the album, resembling to the material of the first demo. An ever-forming monotonous musical sacrifice to the nearing doomsday.

Acceptance and Annihilation:
The aim is the greatest dissonance that could be achieved, the result is a eulogy to Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.

Knocked Out on Heaven’s Floor:
Extremes of the scale between Tartaros and Elysium in every aspect, the latter only to be revealed as a psychedelic illusion. The title is also an obvious mockery of a certain popular rock song, and, in fact, popular songs in general.

In Ceaseless Falling:
The end which has no end. The same theme unfolding itself onwards to eternity.

"Sokszor mondom, hogy kicsit üres a hazai sludge/doom/drone színtér. Viszont mostanában elég nagy robbanásnak lehetünk tanúi és nem csak a most tárgyalt kiadvány kapcsán. Ez a korong pedig az undergroundban jártasabbnak már biztos ismerős, Her Highness, első öt évét foglalja magában. Eddig három splitet dobtak ki a srácok, mind a három meg is állja a helyét, a maga nemében, főleg azért, mert undorítóan mocskos bandákkal álltak össze. Így az eredmény mindig valami mosdatlanul alattomos cucc lett. Ők főként a koncertezésre fókuszáltak, amit ha jól halottam elég jól is művelnek, viszont a Covid betett mindenkinek. Még mindig azt vallom, hogy vannak jó dolgok is a Covidban és érdemes a pozitív oldalát is nézni. Az egyik például, hogy vírus nélkül lehet még most sem lenne Her Highness lemez.

Ha a zenekar küldetését próbálnám meg röviden összefoglalni, valami ilyesmi lenne, hogy a zsáner klasszikusai által érzett mérhetetlen tisztelet és a hazai underground ötlettelensége és a stílus félreértelmezésének akar, valamiféle ellenpontja lenni. Persze mindez, egy több mint öt éves dolog, ami viszont most materializálódott egy teljes egészként. Az első dolog amivel egyből kitűnhetnek, az a zenekar felállása. A sima dob,basszus kombó külföldön már eléggé dívik egy ideje, főleg noise rock körökben, viszont itthon még mostanában indult bele ez a fajta felfogás. Egy ilyen zenekari összetétellel, nem csak a hangzást de a színpadi képet is izgalmasabbá lehet tenni. Kevés annál szebb dolog van, mikor egy félmeztelen basszeros Ady Endrét becsicskítva fogja a cuccot és hőbörög az arcodba, miközben a háttérben vicsorog a dobos. A hangzáshoz pedig pont a minimalizmussal tesz hozzá. Nincsenek giccses díszítések, vagy kamu maszatolások, csak is a lényeg van, jól érthető módon tálalva. Az egyszerű de mégis fogós dallamok rozsdás bicskakánt szántják végig a füled, mert ha már sludge meg ilyen zenekari felállás van, akkor kötelező, hogy tiszta zaj és recsegés legyen az egész. Ezt meg is kapjuk, a "legszebb" formában.

Amire nem tértem még ki, hogy a zene az instrumentális. Azt pedig, hogy hiányzik-e az ének vagy nem, még nem sikerült eldöntenem. Valami hiányérzetem az van, de nem tudnám megmondani, hogy micsoda. Egy szokásos ezerszer hallot, a stílushoz viszont teljesen illő varjús, károgós vokál nem hiszem, hogy eltudná tüntetni ezt a érzést, de ki tudja. Zeneileg kellően változatos ahhoz, hogy szinte végig lekösse a figyelmet. Én a végére kicsit untam már, pedig örömmel szoktam lovagolni a monotonitás hullámain. A klasszikus doomos riffeléseket kellően megtudják variálni, egy kis disszonanciával, vagy enyhe pszichedelikus elszállásokkal annyira, hogy izgalmasnak hassanak. Így nem az ugrik be egyből, hogy ilyet halottunk már ezerszer. A hangzás az tényleg a legundorítóbb csatornafedél alatt kikevert miazmás rettenet, amit ez a zene meg is kíván. A zajok pedig ötletesek, nem nyomják el sem a gitárt, sem dobot, inkább csak ott vannak szélen és adnak egy kis támogatást és emelik a hangulatot, mintha éppen New York-ból menekülnénk.

Homlokkal földet söprő bólogatás a világvégén. A narrátor már halott, de érzed, hogy egy kibaszott apokalipszis közepén vagy. A fények már kihunytak, a hangok pedig saját magukba omlanak és nem marad más utánuk csak a statikus zaj. A zaj amire az emberiség a halálba táncolj magát, egy kis hiányérzet mégis marad. A zenekar szerint ezzel lezárult egy korszak és indul egy következő. Én tűkön ülve várom, mert ha nem is tökéletes, de az ami céljuk volt, azt tökéletesen elérték.

" Niet te verwarren met de Belgische (Antwerpse) stonermetalband Your Highness! Dit is Her Highness, een instrumentaal doom/sludge duo uit de Hongaarse hoofdstad Boedapest met enkel basgitaar en drums (plus toegevoegde noise en effecten). De act werd opgericht in 2014. Alle songs voor dit debuutalbum “Visions Of A Lower Life” (6 tracks, 42 minuten) werden geschreven tussen 2016 en 2019 en het album werd opgenomen tijdens de covid-19 pandemie.

Stoner, sludge of doom metal zonder gitaar. Ooit heel lang geleden (toen Dark Entries nog een gedrukt magazine was) bespraken we een paar releases van een Nederlandse industrial/doom metal band die iets dergelijks deed: B-low.

De opener “Possibilities In A Deviant Rebirth” is meer een droney intro (een simpele bassriff met tonnen feedback en soundmanipulatie) en ook “Acceptance And Annihilition” is een kort droney intermezzo. De vier overige stukken zijn lang (8 tot 11 minuten) en drijven op bassen en drums in een soort bezwerende monotonie. Rauwe grooves wisselen nu en dan af met iets meer ingehouden stukken.

“Adversaries Of Society” teert op doom riffs die wel doen denken aan bands als Bongripper en Electric Wizard.

“The Burnt Offering” geldt als de oudste song op het album, tevens de langste (11 minuten) en mijn absolute favoriet. Achter de loodzware bass riff en de traag bonkende drums zit hier lange tijd ook een dronegeluid dat telkens aanzwelt en weer wegsterft, zodat het doet denken aan de branding van de zee. Dit nummer is groovy as hell.

“Knocked Out On Heaven's Floor” bevat een knipoog naar een bekende Bob Dylan song (ook gecoverd door Guns ‘n’ Roses). Her Highness wil hier wat lachen met populaire rocksongs en met pop in het algemeen. Dit is het soort anti-pop waar de gemiddelde popliefhebber in uiterste vertwijfeling hals over kop van wegloopt. Nochtans zit er ook een rustige break in voor de noisy grooves vol fuzz en distortion weer toeslaan.

In “In Ceaseless Falling” ontvouwt zich tenslotte een groovy thema dat voort zou kunnen duren tot in de eeuwigheid maar na 9,5 minuten volgt onherroepelijk het einde.

Dit album kan best in zijn geheel worden beschouwd, aangezien de meeste nummers ook in elkaar overlopen, waardoor een zekere dissonante continuïteit ontstaat. “Visions Of A Lower Life” van Her Highness is een interessant album voor liefhebbers van de doom, sludge en stoner underground.

"Bass, Schlagzeug und etwas Noise, mehr braucht es nicht, um mit Musik höchstmögliche Aufmerksamkeit zu erzeugen. Und dann ist Her Highness auch nur lediglich ein Duo. Es erstaunt erheblich, mit welch reduzierten Mitteln K.T. und K.A., wie sich die beiden Musiker nennen, dem Genre entsprechen – und dessen Grenzen doch sprengen. Doom und Sludge sind die Grundlage für Her Highness, und wenn man schon keine Gitarre hat, dann verzerrt man den Bass eben ein wenig mehr, dann passt das schon und lässt nichts vermissen. Musikhistorische Beispiele dafür gibt’s genug, dass man mit einem vernünftig eingesetzten Bass die Gitarre gar nicht fehlen hört. Und den Gesang auch nicht, den gibt’s hier ebenso wenig. Dafür gelegentliche Ambient- und sonstige Noise-Samples, die den Sound andicken, und den vermehrten Einsatz von Verzerrern und anderen Amps.

2014 gegründet, ist „Visions Of A Lower Life“ nach diversen Split-Singles tatsächlich erst das Debüt des Duos aus Budapest. Dafür nahmen die beiden in der Pandemie das Material auf, das sie zwischen 2016 und 2019 angesammelt hatten. Es gelingt den beiden vortrefflich, ihre Stücke geschlossen erscheinen zu lassen und das schwere Metall aus einem Guss zu formen. Inklusive attraktiven Ausformungen, etwa der reduzierten Passage in „The Burnt Offering“, in der das Schlagzeug dezent vor sich hin klackt und der Bass nahezu unverzerrt eine nette Melodei tiriliert, bis die Amps wieder zu glühen beginnen und der Bass das tonnenschwere Riffing fortsetzt."
